What Colors Do Birds Like? Question Do birds like bright colored feeders or feeders that blend in with their environment?
Introduction
A lot of animals are color blind, for example, dogs, cats, and rabbits. Birds are not color blind, they see color very well. I wanted to see what they would do if they had two feeders next to each other, one red and one wood. I am going to fill the bird feeders with bird seed for three weeks. Then I will see which one the birds like more. The feeders are about a foot and a half apart and they both have half a bag of bird seed. They also under a lot of shade so its mostly shady and there has been a lot of rain.
Hypothesis
I think the birds will like the red bird feeder better because they are more likely to see the red feeder in the trees.
Materials
One red bird feeder
One wood bird feeder
One big stand under trees
One bag of bird seed

Methods
Buy feeders and bird seed
Fill the feeders with seed
Hang the feeders up
Sprinkle some seed on the ground
Check once a week and check on the side of the feeder to see which bird feeder has been eaten more
Independent and Dependent variables
Independent: The color Of my feeders.
Dependent: How much seed they eat.
Challenges
During the second week of my experiment, it was all rain. Some of the time it was pouring, but sometimes it was long slow rain. The birds did not come while it was raining. My two bird feeders are under trees and the rain made the soil and trees very loose. It has still been raining sometimes on and off and it has been making fewer birds come to the feeders.
Data
In the graph, it shows how much seed was had been eaten over the three weeks. The first week it took about four days for the birds to find the feeders but by the end of the week they ended up liking the red feeder. The second week was all rain and nothing really happened. During the third week, It took some time for the birds to come back, but at the end of the three weeks of collecting data the birds liked the natural feeder.
Results
In the chart, it shows the three weeks of my experiment. Week one The birds were just finding the feeders and it toke about four days for them to find them. Week two was all rain, there was no sun and I did not see birds flying anywhere. Week three grass started growing around my feeders from the feed that was on the edges. I don't know why the grass grew, It was 100% bird seed. Besides that, The birds started liking the wood feeder more. In my hypothesis I said the birds would like the red feeder better. The birds ended up liking the wood feeder better, now that I think about it the answer makes a lot more sense. My yard Is filled with trees and I have a very loud big black lab that barks at everything he sees. I think That can partially scare the birds away.
Discussion
If I did this project again I would measure by seed my weight instead of how much seed was left in the feeder. My hypothesis was not supported, my new hypothesis would be, I Think the birds will not have a preference about the color of the feeder. My conclusion is that since birds can see colors they feel safer in the feeder that blends into their natural habitat. Maybe with all the rain different birds came and they like the natural looking feeder better,
